Within The Dean in Charlottenburg, the restaurant and bakery form an integral part of the hotel’s narrative of contrast and tension. Rather than separating hospitality from neighbourhood life, we allowed these spaces to unfold directly from the entrance, creating a ground floor that feels animated and porous throughout the day.

Original surfaces were revealed wherever possible, their patina sitting alongside bold contemporary insertions. Colour is used with confidence yet restraint — saturated tones drawn from Charlottenburg’s historic façades and modernist architecture are tempered by softer neutrals and tactile finishes. The balance creates depth without excess, energy without noise.

Furniture selections continue the dialogue between discipline and disruption. Tailored modern pieces sit beside expressive silhouettes and carefully sourced vintage finds, subtly referencing Berlin’s avant-garde heritage. Material experimentation — including Linolie-stained plywood elements — reinforces the project’s hands-on approach and interest in elevating everyday materials.

The result is a restaurant and bakery that feel embedded within the building rather than applied to it. Like the wider hotel, the spaces are less concerned with making a single statement and more interested in layering — in creating an atmosphere that invites guests and locals alike to linger, question and return.
